چکیده

We report the detection of fully resolved absorption lines of A−X bands from interstellar CO and CO, through high-resolution spectroscopy of X Per with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The first ultraviolet measurement of an interstellar CO column density shows that its isotopomeric ratio is CO/CO = 8700 ± 3600. Simultaneously, the second ultraviolet detection of interstellar CO establishes its isotopomeric ratio at 3000 ± 600. These ratios are about five times higher than local ambient oxygen isotopic ratios in the ISM. Such severe fractionation of rare species shows that both CO and CO are destroyed by photodissociation, whereas CO avoids destruction through self-shielding. This is to be contrasted with our ratio of CO/CO = 73 ± 12 toward X Per, which is indistinguishable from C/C, the result of a balance between photodissociation of CO and its preferential formation via the isotope exchange reaction between CO and C. High-Resolution Measurements Of Intersystem Bands Of Carbon Monoxide Toward X Persei

In an echelle spectrum of X Per acquired with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph we have identified individual rotational lines of 11 triplet-singlet (intersystem) absorption bands of CO. Four bands provide first detections for interstellar clouds. From a comparison with the ζ Oph sight line we find that X Per is obscured by a higher CO column density of 1.4 × 10 cm. Together with the hig...

The interstellar C 18 O / C 17 O ratio in the solar neighbourhood : The ρ Oph cloud ⋆

Observations of up to ten carbon monoxide (CO and isotopomers) transitions are presented to study the interstellar CO/CO ratio towards 21 positions in the nearby (d∼140 pc) low-mass star forming cloud ρ Oph. A map of the CO J=1–0 distribution of parts of the cloud is also shown. An average CO/CO isotopomeric ratio of 4.11 ± 0.14, reflecting the O/O isotope ratio, is derived from Large Velocity ...

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Survey of the Local Interstellar Medium within 200 Parsec

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations of the interstellar gas toward 30 white dwarf and 1 subdwarf (SdO) stars. These sightlines probe the Local Bubble (LB) and the local interstellar medium (LISM) near the LB. We systematically measure the column densities for the following species: C II, C II*, C III, N I, N II, O I, Ar I, Si II, P II, Fe II, Fe III, and H2. Our surve...

Ultraviolet absorption from interstellar CO and CO was detected toward ρ Oph A and χ Oph. The measurements were obtained at medium resolution with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Column density ratios, N(CO)/N(CO), of 125 ± 23 and 117 ± 35 were derived for the sight lines toward ρ Oph A and χ Oph, respectively. A value of 1100 ± 600 for the ratio N(CO)/N(...
